The end goal is in sight for the multi-institutional Exascale Computing Project (ECP), which launched in 2016 with a mandate from the Department of Energy (DOE) and National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) to achieve exascale-readiness in the U.S. by the 2022 timeframe. The project couldn’t fully prove its mettle until at least one exascale machine was deployed and operational.

Fresh off their third Top500 win for Frontier – now with an 8.4% higher Linpack score – the HPC team at Oak Ridge National Laboratory had some exciting news to share today. Frontier – the first U.S. exascale system and first official Linpack exascale system – has passed its acceptance and is taking on grand scientific challenges.

It’s not quite homeostasis, but it’s close. There was little movement in the latest Top500, released today from the International Supercomputing Conference (ISC) in Hamburg, Germany. The 61st list saw few changes: no new systems in the top 10 and only three new systems within the top 50 cohort (including one from Microsoft Azure and one from Nvidia at numbers 11 and 14, respectively).
