Scientific rationale for study: The literature links tooth loss with impaired cognition; however, the differential effects of tooth types are unknown. Experimental studies have also highlighted the importance of chewing ability, and occlusal stability and symmetry; longitudinal studies are warranted. Principal findings: Posterior tooth loss increased dementia risk; chewing ability impacted milder cognitive decline.
