Telstra is providing 12,000 free mobile phones away in a bid to help vulnerable customers switch from 3G to 4G, as the network shutdown looms. The telecommunication company is issuing complimentary phones to customers who are either elderly, live rurally or are in difficult situations. Difficult situations include those facing financial issues or recovering from a natural disaster, along with some customers with life-threatening medical conditions who rely on a working phone.

More than half a million glass mugs have been recalled after they began shattering when filled with hot liquid, dousing coffee drinkers in boiling liquids and slicing their hands. So far, the company behind the mugs, JoyJolt, has heard from 103 people who have reported the mugs breaking upon contact with a hot liquid, which is exactly what the mugs are designed to hold. Dozens of people have been injured from using the faulty cups, suffering burns and lacerations across their body.

Another chilly weekend has hit NSW, Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia and Canberra, with some showers sprinkled in to confirm the proper arrival of winter. The Bureau of Meteorology says low pressure areas that have been sitting along the Tasman Sea all week will continue to bring cool, southerly winds along Australia's lower east coast on Saturday. 'It's going to be another cool and frosty weekend for many areas,' meteorologist Angus Hines warned.

Aussies are being urged to stay home if they are unwell as influenza cases spike across the country. Hospitals across Victoria have been put on high alert due to a surge in flu cases. Flu cases have risen by 28 per cent in Victoria over the past two weeks, with experts warning of more variants and low vaccination rates as the cause for the high numbers. New South Wales has also seen a 33 per cent spike in serious cases, according to the latest NSW Health Respiratory Surveillance Report.

A mother-of-four has been charged with defrauding generous people of more than $37,000 by falsely claiming she was battling breast cancer. Tara Michelle Enoka was earlier this month charged with gaining benefit by fraud, after a GoFundMe was set up to help her with her alleged battle with breast and cervical cancer.
