Medicare Special Needs Plan sign-ups rose more than the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and Wall Street expected during the 2025 annual enrollment period, offering a welcome boost to an otherwise slowing Medicare Advantage market. More than 7.3 million people were enrolled in Special Needs Plans as of Feb. 1, up 10.1% from a year before, according to a Modern Healthcare analysis of data CMS published last week.

Healthcare continues to add jobs but the industry's gains in 2024 did not outpace 2023's performance — except when it involved jobs within hospitals. The industry added 681,300 jobs in 2024, compared with 688,400 a year earlier. While the number of jobs in other major areas of the sector saw smaller increases year-over-year, employment gains in hospitals rose 3.8% in 2024, up slightly from 3.7% in 2023.

UnitedHealthcare and Centene have received higher Medicare Advantage star ratings for the 2025 plan year after the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services revised their scores. On Monday, CMS published updated Medicare Advantage Star Ratings program data that reveal the agency increased the quality ratings for 12 UnitedHealthcare contracts and seven Centene contracts, each of which comprise multiple Medicare Advantage plans.
