    Executive Sports Editor Mark Tupper tells a story about Michael Jordan's championship-era Chicago Bulls coming to the then-Assembly Hall in Champaign for an exhibition game. A cluster of reporters surrounded Jordan for a brief set of questions and answers. At its conclusion, as Tupper looked on in a combination of surprise and bafflement, a number of reporters thrust pen and paper toward Jordan, seeking autographs. That's just not done.

    Given how many times the death of Decatur Celebration has been “imminent,” based on the unsolicited opinions of those who have claimed to be in the know, complaints about Tuesday's Celebration announcements have become little more than background noise, contributing little to the conversation. What does the announcement of a fenced downtown and a $5 weekend admission fee mean to the event? Who knows? The beauty of the plan is it gives patrons a direct vote on the future of Decatur Celebration.

    He's the biggest since Elvis – again. This weekend, Garth Brooks will match the number of sellout crowds for which he's performed previously at Champaign's State Farm Center. In 1992, Brooks first played Assembly Hall in a show that at the time was the fastest sellout in Assembly Hall history. Tickets were $18, with a $1 service charge. Five years later, Brooks topped himself with a trio of Assembly Hall sellouts.

    A friend messaged me with disappointment a couple of months ago. And while his message may seem trite and insignificant, it also brings additional light on an issue that should concern anyone interested in historical preservation. “'Who's Who in Baseball' isn't being printed this year!" he wrote. Even people who don't care about baseball but know fanatics of the sport would probably recognize the bound paperback-sized book and its predominantly red cover. Since 1916, the book was a rite of spring.
