Generally, it appears that October and November saw a sag in footfall in the hospitality industry and reduced consumer expenditure due to anxiety about the "tough budget" flagged in advance by the new government. This will mean many businesses being unable to make the forecast revenue and profits for the year.

Sailing is a big part of towns such as Yarmouth, pictured (Image: IWCP) We are coming to the end of the sailing season, and people who own boats on the Isle of Wight are starting to have them lifted out of the water and “laid up” for the winter. So begins an annual transition as vessels are serviced at the various yards around the Island. It is very difficult to quantify the value of this.

Even before we came to live on the Island, I knew there were three classes of citizenship here, “Caulkheads”, “Overners” and “Grockles”. We now fit into the Overners category, drawn to the Island by sailing at weekends, and then confined here during Covid, and latterly discovering that most things we could do in London can now be done through the magic of Wightfibre.

He suggests a high level bridge from Northwood to Saunders Way, which would be a very costly undertaking, and unlikely to ever get funding.
