PN election candidate George Muscat has ripped into restaurants for presenting customers with tipping options on POS machines. Muscat said that many people end up tipping waiters by mistake or because they feel too uncomfortable to opt out. “It is shameful and very uncomfortable that when we pay our bills, the first thing that pops up is a prompt to leave a tip of €5, €10 or €15, with the option of pressing a button if you don’t want to tip,” Muscat said.

Did you feel the earth shake early this morning? A 4.8 magnitude earthquake struck the Ionian Sea at around 3:26am, with tremors felt across Sicily, Calabria, and even as far as Malta. Several people reported feeling tremors in towns such as Msida, Marsaskala, San Ġwann and Birżebbuġa, with some stating it was strong enough to wake them up. The earthquake’s epicentre was reportedly located some 55km from Augusta at a depth of 48km. Thankfully, no major damage has been reported.

Labour MP Edward Zammit Lewis has called for a revision of parliamentary gender quotas to ensure that MPs don’t get elected by the mechanism more than once. The quotas have become a political talking point in recent days, with European Parliament President Roberta Metsolawarning it has become a “smokescreen to manipulate statistics at the expense of women” and PN MP Claudette Buttigieg pledging to refuse her seat if she is once again elected via quota.

University lecturer and journalist Andrew Azzopardi has flat out denied media allegations that he had pressured the authorities to grant prison leave to convicted murderer Erin Tanti. After Winston Zahra, cousin of the late Lisa Zahra, said that Tanti had been granted prison leave on a number of occasions allegedly due to lobbying and support from a “well-known media personality”, some journalists turned their focus to Azzopardi.
