Nationalist MP Ivan J Bartolo confirmed that several people have approached him to gauge his interest in contesting the PN leadership. Bartolo told Lovin Malta that he isn’t personally seeking out the leadership and isn’t actively meeting people to discuss such a move. However, he said that he has been approached several times, including by councillors, and that he isn’t ruling it out at this stage.

In public, they appeared to be close allies, but behind the scenes, differences between Bernard Grech and Roberta Metsola were gradually emerging. This has been a long time coming. Metsola has been eying the post of PN leader since at least 2020, when Adrian Delia was facing significant internal strife. Franco Debono has publicly urged Bernard Grech to reconsider his decision to resign as leader of the Nationalist Party. Debono said that he has known Grech on a personal level since they shared a minibus back when they were St Aloysius students. “I will reveal a little secret here – he used to fancy himself a playboy back then,” he quipped. “During his time as leader, we always had mutual respect towards each other.

Six days have passed since Grech announced his resignation, yet no one has declared their intention to run. Roberta Metsola, who was seen by many as a frontrunner, ruled it out last weekend, stating she has a responsibility towards her role as European Parliament President.

PL executive member Jason Micallef has praised outgoing PN leader Bernard Grech for what he described as a “strategic move to call Roberta Metsola’s bluff”. Micallef spoke out after Grech’s aide Ray Bezzina called out Metsola for her decision not to contest the PN leadership election, warning that her ambiguity about her own political aspirations had cast a lingering shadow over Grech’s leadership of the party. “Bernard Grech called Roberta Metsola’s bluff,” Micallef said.
