    The Maltese Olympic Committee has hit out at national table tennis champion Gabriel Grixti after he criticised them for leaving him out of the Small States of Europe team in favour of five foreign-born players. In a statement, the MOC said that while it is “very nice” to be the national champion of a small state, it gives more weight to table tennis players who compete in countries with a higher standard.

    In his first public appearance as Pope Leo XIV, the head of the Catholic Church wore a pectoral cross that was gifted to him by a Maltese Augustinian priest. Church-owned media house Newsbook reported that Fr Josef Sciberras, Postulator General for the Augustinian Order in Rome, had gifted the cross to Robert Prevost when he was appointed Cardinal in 2023. The cross is said to contain sacred relics from saints and blessed of the Order, including St Augustine himself, St Monica and others.

    Hospice Malta co-founder Dr Peter Muscat has endorsed a proposal for Malta to legalise voluntary euthanasia for patients suffering from terminal conditions. “As a doctor, my main goal is obviously to help cure people and ease their suffering, and as a psychiatrist, it is also help eliminate the mental disturbances that people might pass through,” Muscat said at the launch of a public consultation this week.

    Malta’s national seniors table tennis champion Gabriel Grixti said he feels “tired, betrayed and discarded” after he was excluded from the national squad for this year’s Games of the Small States of Europe in favour of foreign-born players. Grixti said he dedicates over 18 hours a week to the sport despite the stress of being a fifth-year medical student, all for the sake of proudly representing Malta on the international stage.
