Growing up, I never understood the reasoning for planting seeds directly in the ground versus starting plants as transplants. I could deduce what and when (which crops worked best for each method and roughly when to plant them), but the all-important why behind these choices remained elusive. Here’s a quick rundown: direct seeding (or direct sowing) means a seed is planted in its final location such as a pot or a bed. Transplanting also involves seeding, but it is a temporary address.

Composting is a time-honored practice for my family. We actively accept yard waste from both the local municipality and landscaping firms, then we blend in manure from nearby stables. We hone our recipe, mixing brown and green materials to perfect the carbon-to-nitrogen ratio. From there, we rely on our microscopic workforce to instinctively transform these inputs into a dual-purpose fertilizer and soil amendment.

For most gardeners, the onset of winter signals an all stop. The last remnants are devotedly harvested and tidied up, and earnest planning begins for the spring. On the positive side, the winter chill interrupts pest and disease cycles, effectively rebooting the ecosystem and giving us a fresh start. However, the gap between last and first harvest can be daunting. It’s disheartening to wait upward of five months to sample the fruits (or vegetables) of your labor.
