Here’s a quick rundown: direct seeding (or direct sowing) means a seed is planted in its final location such as a pot or a bed. Transplanting also involves seeding, but it is a temporary address.

For most gardeners, the onset of winter signals an all stop. The last remnants are devotedly harvested and tidied up, and earnest planning begins for the spring. On the positive side, the winter chill interrupts pest and disease cycles, effectively rebooting the ecosystem and giving us a fresh start. However, the gap between last and first harvest can be daunting. It’s disheartening to wait upward of five months to sample the fruits (or vegetables) of your labor.
