News media—including the Chronicle, CBS News, NBC Bay Area, KRON4, KTVU, and others—parroted these claims without scrutiny, citing seemingly dramatic drops in crime in almost every category. But that hopeful story is untrue. We cannot know yet if crime is up or down because the year-to-date crime data has not been tabulated fully by Oakland Police.
