    What is the definition of “Star Wars music”? Maybe, to paraphrase Jimmy Carter, you just know it when you hear it. Most people would answer by pointing to the man who invented and canonized this unique subgenre: John Williams, composer of nine Star Wars films from 1977 to 2019, the original themes for two spinoffs and a district of Disneyland.

    “Sinners,” Ryan Coogler’s newest film, supposes that music has the power to conjure spirits past, present and evil. It’s a compelling hook, one that leads the story’s heroes, including Michael B. Jordan (playing twins), Hailee Steinfeld, Delroy Lindo and revelatory newcomer Miles Caton, into conflict with bloodsucking creatures of the night but also on a time-tripping tour of American musical history.

    I was looking forward to last week’s series of four John Williams concerts with the LA Phil. Not because it’s rare to hear John’s music performed live, and certainly not by his hometown orchestra with their unabashed fanboy conductor. The first concert I ever attended at Disney Hall after we moved to L.A., in fact, was a night of varied film music, and the suite from Close Encounters—with the hall’s mighty pipe organ—defibrillated my heart.

    This Sunday, the Los Angeles Master Chorale will fill the sails of Walt Disney Concert Hall with that stormy, earwormy cantata by Carl Orff: “Carmina Burana.” The chorale will be joined by an orchestra and two children’s choruses, and will also perform the world premiere of ’s “Jahaaṅ: Five Indian Folk Songs.”“Carmina Burana” is a mainstay of the classical repertoire and one of the most widely recognizable concert works of the 20th century.

    Colman Domingo woke up naturally at 3:30 in the morning on the day Oscar nominations were announced. He was jetlagged, having just returned to L.A. from Europe. He looked up at the moon and felt that, despite the darkness of the fires and the country’s crazy politics and everything else going on — no matter what happens — the moon was there, and he was blessed.
