Isaac Berry began the season in the bullpen for the baseball team at the University of Pikeville Bears, but the former Virginia High standout has since emerged as a leader of the starting rotation. He is 4-3 with one save and a 5.52 ERA in 14 outings, seven of which have been starts. “He’s stepped up in a big way for us,” said UPike coach Cody Andreychuk. “We had an injury to our Friday [starter] and he was playing well enough, so we said let’s give him the opportunity to prove himself.

EMORY, Va. – Patrick Henry’s Sophie Ditto swung and missed at the offering that drifted high out of the strike zone – an intended curveball that instead acted like a riseball – on what was the 146th and final pitch of the night for Holston ace Rily Cobler. That put an end to an intense, sometimes sloppy, 2 ½-hour slog in which the Holston Cavaliers survived for an 8-6 Hogoheegee District softball victory over the Patrick Henry Rebels on Monday.

BRISTOL, Tenn. – It wasn’t her best performance of the season, but King University senior slugger Tori Ryan still made her presence known as the Tornado swept a Conference Carolinas softball doubleheader from North Greenville on Saturday. She walked and later came around to score in the third inning, while supplying a fourth-inning sacrifice fly as King collected a 7-6 victory in the opener. Ryan went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs as the Tornado took a 9-5 triumph in the nightcap.

Meanwhile, the Council Cobras finished as runner-up in the BDD tournament and qualified for the Region 1D tournament, losing at Honaker in the quarterfinals. Those feats were significant since they were fielding a team on the varsity level for the first time since 2019.

Gavin Cross begins the 2025 season where he concluded his 2024 campaign and that’s with the Northwest Arkansas Naturals, the Double-A affiliate of the Kansas City Royals. If he swings the bat like he did during spring training, the former Tennessee High and Virginia Tech slugger could hit his way out of town rather quickly. “The way I personally look at it is it’s not where he starts, it’s where he ends,” said Drew Saylor, Kansas City’s director of hitting performance.
