Mark Carney won with a landslide — supported by 86 percent of the over 150,000 Liberals who voted. After nearly a decade of Justin Trudeau, the Liberal party has found a new face for business as usual. Freeland, who came a distant second with 8 percent of the votes, differed little from Carney on policy. Trump, international trade, the economy, and militarism dominated the discussion. What really defined Carney as the frontrunner was his appearance of separation from Trudeau.

Regularity in terms of the election cycle in Ontario is every four years meaning that the next election, under normal circumstances, would have been June 2026. Doug Ford calculated that leaving an election until then was too risky — risky, that is, from the perspective of Ford himself not being able to retain power for another four years.
