    MITCHELL — Jack Maser needed some extra work to take medalist honors in the Mitchell Invite boys golf meet Tuesday at Scenic Knolls Golf Course. The Gering senior edged Scottsbluff's Noah Shaddick on the third playoff hole after the two had rounds of 75. Shaddick was one of four Bearcats to crack the Top 10 as Scottsbluff took the team title with a 321, eight strokes ahead of Gering. Sidney was third with a 363, followed by Chadron (369).

    It was a season of firsts for Jazmyn Garcia. The sophomore earned her first trip to the NSAA state tournament by being the inaugural Bearcat to win a district girls wrestling title. And she came close to another program milestone — a state championship. For that season, the Bearcat underclassman — who fell to Nebraska City's Makayla Vasser — has been selected as the Star-Herald’s All-Panhandle girls wrestling squad and headlines the 28 individuals who were named to either the first-  second teams.

    GERING — The Gering girls soccer team surpassed its win total from last year on Thursday afternoon in dramatic fashion. Allison Herbel accounted for both goals as the Bulldogs edged North Platte 2-1 at Memorial Stadium for a third-straight win to improve to 5-3 overall. Gering also beat Torrington and Newcastle in the streak, having allowed just a goal to the three opponents in that run. "I saw huge, huge potential in these girls," Bulldogs coach Krista Wiedeman said.

    CHAPPEL — Jayce Haas was part of the first-place 400 relay and was second in the 200 to help the Hemingford boys finish second as a team in the Storm Invite track meet Tuesday afternoon at Creek Valley High School. St. Pats won the meet with 148 points, and Kimball and Potter-Dix were third and fourth, respectively. Kimball’s Derek Russell won the discus and was second in the shot put. Teammate Trey Cook won the pole vault and Braxton Miller was first in the triple jump.

    MITCHELL —  Kaden Hessler and Jackson Jenkins were both part of the offensive and defensive lines at Mitchell High School, but the tandem's days of being teammates is not over yet. Both will be members of the Concordia University football program. “I think it just kind of happened, you know," Hessler said. "We weren’t really planning on going together but I think we both really liked it.
