People are using 'ghost' number plates to avoid getting caught for dangerous driving, according to an MP who is attempting to change the law. Sarah Coombes, who represents West Bromwich, wants the penalties increased to tackle illegal licence plates which are being used by some motorists to run red lights and ignore speed limits. Motorists can buy so-called 'ghost' or 'stealth' plates for as little as £30.

Toy giant Mattel is being sued by a mother who says her daughter accessed a porn website via a link on the packaging for a Wicked doll. The company released dolls of characters played by British actress Cynthia Erivo and US singer Ariana Grande in the film version of the hit musical. The mistake was spotted last month and the dolls were recalled on 11 November. A class action lawsuit has now been filed in federal court in Los Angeles.

Rescue teams in Pennsylvania are searching for a grandmother who may have plunged into a sinkhole while looking for her missing cat. Elizabeth Pollard, 64, has not been heard from since Monday afternoon when police believe she fell into the hole in Marguerite, about 40 miles (65km) east of Pittsburgh. Heavy machinery has been deployed to examine the site, while crews work above and below ground.

Two people have died and more than 30 others have been injured after their coach crashed on a mountainous road in the Pyrenees in southern France. A total of 47 people including the driver were on board when the collision happened on Sunday at 5pm near the ski resort of Porte-Puymorens, the regional administration said. The vehicle collided with a cliff edge on the twisting N320 road in the Pyrenees-Orientales region, which borders Spain and Andorra.

Alex Salmond has been described as an "inspiration", "political genius" and a "giant of a man" at a memorial service held for the former Scottish first minister in Edinburgh. Around 500 people, including family, friends and politicians from across the spectrum attended a service on Saturday at St Giles' Cathedral to celebrate his love of Scotland and commitment to the cause of independence. A man has suffered a serious head injury after a boulder was dropped from a bridge on to his passing van in Nottinghamshire. Police said it went through the victim's windscreen on the A617 near Rainworth at 10pm on Friday. Officers have described it as a "mindless and abhorrent act" and have appealed for witnesses and asked drivers to check their dashcam footage. Mourners have been paying their last respects to the comedian Janey Godley at her funeral in Glasgow. Former first minister Nicola Sturgeon was among those to attend the service at St Mary's Cathedral in Glasgow. Godley found surprising fame with her impression of Ms Sturgeon's COVID-19 news briefings during the pandemic. Murder detectives have released a CCTV image of a woman they want to speak to after a fatal hit-and-run involving an e-bike in Derbyshire. Mother-of-one Alana Armstrong, 25, died at the scene in the village of Pleasley on Tuesday evening. She was riding pillion when the e-bike was rammed by a dark-coloured 4x4, believed to be a Land Rover Discovery, police said.
