Waiting continues for Congressional action on the farm bill and other aspects of the next federal budget. Divvying up funds in the next federal budget and what that means for farm conservation programs seems to be on hold, said Brian Feldpausch, a Grundy County farmer and vice president with the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation. “Their goal (previously) was to see the Senate bill done by July 4,” Feldpausch said.

Iran’s limited response to the United States’ weekend bombing of Iranian nuclear facilities initially added little impact to world grain markets, analyst Jack Scoville with Price Futures Group said June 23. “If that’s it, we’ll stay fine and go on our way and hopefully they will, too,” Scoville said. The retaliation probably won’t impact grain markets “a whole lot,” he added. “There’s always the tariffs and the big beautiful (budget) bill” that remain potential factors for grain markets, he said.

Demand for soybeans and soybean meal exports is in a periodical lull while global markets remain strong for corn and weak for wheat, Jack Scoville, market analyst for The Price Futures Group, said June 9. “Export demand is in its seasonal doldrums,” Scoville said. “Export demand remains less for U.S. soybeans as China has been taking almost all the export from South America.”All three wheat markets closed up June 9 despite improved growing conditions at home and abroad predicted, he said.

Farmers play a big role in elected or appointed leadership positions in rural county governments. Iowa farmer Barry Anderson is a prime example. He followed family members’ sense of community service to become a county supervisor. “I got an extra sense of service to the community started when I was growing up as I watched my dad and grandpa who both farmed and were members of Farm Bureau,” said Anderson, who has served on the Clay County Board of Supervisors for over 10 years.
