The success of public transport emissions cuts in Auckland will no longer be measured, deemed too difficult to calculate and replaced by a simple number for electric buses in the fleet. Auckland Transport is deleting emissions reduction from its list of operational performance measures. At the same time, it’s also pledging to “seek continuous improvement in reducing greenhouse gas emissions associated with our assets, operations, services and corporate activities”.

Auckland Mayor Wayne Brown realises he “risks public opprobrium” but is questioning ratepayer funding for the “motherhood and apple pie” causes of surf lifesaving and Watersafe Auckland. He claims one surf club is like a big babysitting operation, has questioned the value of money going to clubs operating on relatively calm northeast Auckland beaches like Red Beach, Mairangi Bay and Orewa, and says surfers help out more than lifeguards where he surfs.

Analysis: A fancy new stadium for the Auckland waterfront has yet again been vanquished by the wily ageing edifice in Mt Eden, but ratepayers aren’t yet off the hook. Eden Park ‘won’ the vote by Auckland councillors, who for now will put no money into its development project. But essentially all they did was rule out a grand proposal for waterfront land at Quay Park, and endorse Eden Park to try to win funding of hundreds of millions in funding elsewhere.
