With the clock winding down in the final seconds of the first half, St. Ignatius senior guard Sally Kennedy took the inbounds pass in stride and sprinted upcourt. In rhythm, she let it fly from just inside halfcourt. This wasn’t just any old shot though, any desperate heave. This was a shot Kennedy had worked at and practiced.

The Mother McAuley golf team has fielded a lineup this fall dominated by underclassmen. Through weekend meets, conference and nonconference duals and team practices, junior Delia Sullivan saw the Mighty Macs rise to the occasion again and again. The young Macs wanted to show what they could do. Shooting a 345 as a team on Oct. 1 at Lincoln Oaks Golf Course in Crete, Mother McAuley won the team title at the Class 2A Shepard regional. It was the program’s first regional championship since 2012.

With her round in the books, Evergreen Park (EP) senior Sofie Panatera felt confident she’d be moving on from the regional to next week’s sectional. She had played a consistent round, avoiding any big blow-ups along the way. But still, she wasn’t sure of the cut-off. What about her teammate, fellow senior Joie Burns? No need to worry. Both Mustangs were moving on. Panatera shot an 89 overall, good for fifth in the individual standings, and Burns shot a 96, 15th in the standings, on Oct.
