It is common to hear that libraries are of the past, “Who reads anymore?,” and are seeing declined usage. In reality, our library, and libraries across Adair County, have seen increased usage and circulation. Libraries still act as a hub for information and research and have adapted in the age of the internet by being equipped with internet, computers and even hotspots. Libraries are also — and increasing becoming — an important third place.

As Marist battled St. Viator in an East Suburban Catholic Conference matchup, sophomore guard Caroline Flynn was everywhere for the RedHawks. She scored on fast breaks and hard drives to the hoop, pulled down rebounds, dished out assists and piled up steals as a defensive star. Sure, Flynn wanted to help lead the team to the win, but on this day, a little more was on the line. Marist hosted a fundraiser for the Jan. 11 game with all proceeds going to the Flynn Family.

As a member of the Class 3A state runner-up squad last year, Mt. Carmel senior guard Cameron Thomas did a little bit of everything. The versatile athlete was a jack of all trades for the Caravan, and he did the job wherever he was needed, whether on offense or defense, on the perimeter or in the lane, handling the ball or playing in the post.

Tatum Harris is a three-year varsity player for the Evergreen Park girls basketball team. But after playing a supporting role off the bench as a freshman and sophomore, Harris has stepped into a starring role for the Mustangs this season, and she’s running with the opportunity. Helping Evergreen Park (EP) to a 62-19 victory on Jan. 9 at Tinley Park, Harris finished with 21 points, 8 rebounds, 8 assists, a steal and a block in the South Suburban Conference crossover.

After missing the 2023 season with an injury, North Central College (NCC) junior cornerback Jahmar Daniel returned to the field this fall for the Cardinals with a vengeance. As he went through his recovery and rehab, he made the best of the previous season by being around the team as much as possible. But, Daniel needed to be back on the field with his teammates.

Dontae Bell tried to make the most of his junior year while he dealt with a serious knee injury. When the recovery time took longer than anticipated, Bell transferred from Victory Rock Prep in Florida to Rich Township High School in Chicago’s south suburbs. Even after he recovered, he wasn’t feeling quite 100 percent, but now after transferring to Leo this summer, Bell is feeling strong, physically fit and glad to be back on the court. Helping host Leo to a 69-53 victory on Jan.

Last year, Markese Peoples tried to make the best of his freshman season as he played for both the junior-varsity and varsity teams at St. Laurence. A serious ankle injury and recovery limited his playing time, but Peoples knew that this year would be different. As a sophomore, wherever he was needed, in the post or on the perimeter, he’d be ready to go.

Late in a quarterfinal matchup of the Hinsdale Central Holiday Classic against Maine South, Br. Rice senior guard Marcos Gonzales drove the lane for layup and landed awkwardly on his right ankle. The pain was immediate, and soon after, his ankle was swollen with a rainbow-like bruise. Although Gonzales was out of action, the Crusaders defeated Maine South and won in the semifinals against Lane Tech. But, all the while, he had an eye on returning to play in the tournament championship.

Midway through the first half, the Most Holy Redeemer (MHR) fourth-grade boys basketball team found itself down 6-0. Shots weren’t dropping, and Christ the King (CK)-White was dominating the boards. But as MHR Coach Tim O’Connell has seen through the first month-plus of the season, the Raiders weren’t about to panic. There was plenty of time to turn things around.

In an era of basketball when most shots come from three-point range or are point-blank attempts, Marian Catholic senior Zack Sharkey is a bit of a throwback. The 6’3” guard has an impressive handle on the ball and can take it to the hole with ease. In addition, after some hard work to develop the shot, he’s got a consistent jumper from long range. But, Sharkey’s bread and butter is midrange, and that’s where he ate things up on Dec. 30 in the Hinsdale Central Holiday Classic.
