    A three-game stretch of their best softball of the season is all that stands between two area teams and the NCAA Division III softball tournament. Loras and UW-Platteville both open their respective six-team conference tournaments today, hosted at campus sites by the No. 1 seeds. Both tournaments are single elimination and will crown a champion — and the automatic qualifier to the NCAA tournament — on Saturday.

    Western Dubuque and Dubuque Wahlert are right in the mix for a Mississippi Valley Conference girls golf championship. Cedar Falls, Cedar Rapids Washington and Cedar Rapids Xavier tied for first at 335, with Cedar Falls winning on fifth-score tiebreaker, and Western Dubuque was a stroke back in fourth place, while Dubuque Wahlert shot 340 to place fifth at the MVC Super Meet on Monday at Pheasant Ridge Golf Course in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

    The NCAA Division III softball regular season is down to the final weekend, and for three area programs, their seasons will be on the line. Loras College and the University of Dubuque will both be playing to clinch a spot in the six-team American Rivers Conference tournament. The University of Wisconsin-Platteville reduced its magic number for clinching a spot in the six-team WIAC tournament to one.

    Dubuque Wahlert had the wind at its back for the first half and managed just a single goal. Against an opponent that had put 10 away the day prior and was about to have the advantage, the Golden Eagles had a daunting task ahead. They proved up to the challenge. Luke Welbes and Owen McCleary scored goals, and Nathan Schiesl backstopped a strong team defensive effort with six saves in goal as Wahlert upended city rival Senior, 2-0, on Tuesday at Steele Field.
