Dubuque Wahlert had the wind at its back for the first half and managed just a single goal. Against an opponent that had put 10 away the day prior and was about to have the advantage, the Golden Eagles had a daunting task ahead. They proved up to the challenge. Luke Welbes and Owen McCleary scored goals, and Nathan Schiesl backstopped a strong team defensive effort with six saves in goal as Wahlert upended city rival Senior, 2-0, on Tuesday at Steele Field.

EAST DUBUQUE, Ill. — Curin Oberman’s performances this season have exponentially raised the expectations around her. It’s no longer merely possible that she will throw a no-hitter, it’s almost becoming the standard. Oberman, a standout sophomore, took a perfect game into the seventh inning — extending her streak of retiring consecutive Galena batters to 43 before settling for a one-hitter in East Dubuque’s 4-1 victory over the rival Pirates on Tuesday at East Dubuque High School.

The opportunities were there, the results just didn’t come with them. That all changed in the final 14 minutes. Hayden Loewenberg scored the go-ahead goal with 13 minutes and 10 seconds remaining, and Mitch Tackney scored two more over the final 6:28 as Dubuque Hempstead pulled away late to beat crosstown rival Wahlert, 4-1, on Tuesday at Timmerman Field. “That next goal really started the ball. It really kept rolling from there,” Loewenberg said.

EPWORTH, Iowa — Hannah Crampton and her teammates have already experienced every possible outcome just three matches into the season. Dubuque Senior couldn’t wait to get this one out of the way. Crampton scored the Rams’ first goal of the year, and Senior earned its first victory of the season with a 3-1 victory over Western Dubuque on Monday at Buchman Field. “I think it’s one of the most rewarding things that can come out of us playing as a team like this,” Crampton said.

I didn’t know Batts well, but we would always greet each other at events and share small talk. Always friendly. A huge loss for QCT readers and the industry.

Words are difficult to find this morning. Steve Batterson, a sports reporter at the Quad-City Times for 38+ years, died Tuesday afternoon. He was a consummate pro, a workhorse, a great teammate and such a kind-hearted man. He loved his job and did it very well. Rest easy, Batts. https://t.co/qCOWVsJkFx
