Tacoma Defiance took 120 minutes plus stoppage time to do it, but they beat Oakland Roots 2-1 in the third round of the US Open Cup. A 28th minute free kick banger from Peter Kingston and a 108th minute finish from Osaze De Rosario proved enough to overcome a 75th minute penalty for the Roots from Neveal Hackshaw and a 117th minute red card for Cody Baker, as Defiance now await the outcome of the draw to learn their opponents for the 4th round of the U.S. Open Cup.

Over 120 minutes, Ballard FC had gone toe-to-toe with Spokane Velocity. The two Washington-based soccer teams were facing off in the first round of the U.S. Open Cup for the second straight year, and despite the teams' difference in professional status, there was virtually no daylight between them. As was the case in 2024, Velocity brought a full squad of professional players into their cross-state derby. And as was the case in 2024, Ballard was composed entirely of amateur talent.

Fresh off their 2-1 win over USL League One side Spokane Velocity, the Tacoma Defiance found out on Thursday they’ll be hosting the USL Championship’s Oakland Roots in the third round of the U.S. Open Cup. That match will be played either April April 15 or 16, and will almost certainly require the Defiance to reschedule an MLS Next Pro road match against Houston Dynamo 2 that is scheduled for April 15. Assuming the Dynamo 2 match is moved, the Defiance should come in reasonably well rested.

Tacoma Defiance are headed to the third round of the U.S. Open Cup after their extra-time 2-1 win at Starfire over Spokane Velocity FC. Goals in the 3rd and 99th minute of the game from Joonmo Kang and an own-goal created by Edson Carli pushed Defiance to victory, while a 79th minute goal from Luis Gil tied the game for Spokane and ultimately forced an extra 30 minutes of play. Defiance took an early through Kang.

Another uncharacteristic error led to the Seattle Sounders playing from behind for much of the match, but this time they were able to salvage a 1-1 tie with the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday. Albert Rusnák’s 80th minute strike was a beauty and allowed the Sounders to walk away with something after dominating the second half. It wasn’t enough to keep their winless run against the Earthquakes from running to nine games across all competitions, however.
