    Urgent repairs have been approved for a historic canal site in north Shropshire. The plans were approved in the same week Historic England put Ellesmere Boatyard on its register of heritage sites that are at risk. The Canal and River Trust (CRT), which owns the site, wants to repair buildings including the timber store, engine house and carpenters' workshop, as well as removing a covered walkway.

    Student accommodation is to be repurposed for homeless people. The scheme at The Tannery on Barker Street in Shrewsbury will provide 60 en-suite rooms with communal cooking and living areas. They will be used to temporarily accommodate people who have lost their permanent homes, Shropshire Council said. A planning officer said there would be an on-site office with suitable security. The student rooms fell vacant after the closure of University Centre Shrewsbury.

    A group of firefighters and supporters have completed a charity hill-walk - in full kit. The group from Hereford & Worcester Fire and Rescue Service (HWFRS) completed the nine-mile (15km) hike over the Malverns in full uniform, some carrying breathing apparatus, which totalled about 25kg (55lb). The event has so far raised more than £700 for the Fire Fighters Charity, which helps serving and retired members.

    The mayor of Ludlow has told a senior officer at Shropshire Council "you don’t care what we think", in a row over plans for a plant to recycle green waste in the town. The county authority wants to turn a former anaerobic digester into a unit producing biochar, a form of charcoal. During a presentation of plans to Ludlow Town Council by waste official Mark Foxall, mayor Beverley Waite said it seemed the decision to go ahead had already been taken.
