(Editor's note: There was little doubt seven-and-a-half years ago when this review was published that Houston Griffith was overrated as the No. 63 overall prospect in the Class of 2018. But he was the son of former Illinois 2,300-yard rusher Howard Griffith, and the younger Griffith certainly flashed enough on the prep level to warrant optimism upon his arrival at Notre Dame. As stated in the review below, his prep tape discredited his No. 63 ranking.

A self-proclaimed indifferent student, Shields rose above his academic shortcomings to become one of Notre Dame’s greatest success stories. Now he’s spending his time making sure the lives of others are enriched, particularly former Irish football players. (Editor's note: I stated it from the outset. I must not have the insight/foresight to see what Jack Kiser would bring to Notre Dame. My attitude was mostly dictated by the level of competition Kiser faced in high school and a frame that didn't appear to be able to accommodate another 30 pounds, which is what he would need to play effectively on the next level. That was what I felt at the time and I wrote it. I wasn't going to be disingenuous and write something that I didn't believe.

In his three seasons as head football coach at Notre Dame, and specifically this past season as his experience and command of the program really came into focus, Marcus Freeman put together a team in 2024 that not only came within a possession or two of winning the national title but also remaining a threat to make the playoffs on a regular basis.
