Liverpool 2-1 West Ham (Diaz 18′, Van Dijk 89′ | Robertson 86′ OG)ANFIELD — Football is a sport that drowns in statistics and on Merseyside there is only one that matters. It is a line they are due to cross on 27 April at Anfield, where they face Tottenham Hotspur, whose resistance is expected to be blancmange-like.

Everton 1-1 Arsenal (Ndiaye pen 49′ | Trossard 34′)GOODISON PARK — Arsenal came to Goodison on Grand National day, knowing that unless Liverpool “did a Devon Loch” their title ambitions were dead. Despite the story of the Queen Mother’s horse collapsing in the home straight being regularly trotted out as a sporting metaphor, the story of the 1956 National has never translated easily to football.

Liverpool are prepared to meet the buyout clause in Dean Huijsen’s Bournemouth contract after identifying him as a long-term replacement for club captain Virgil van Dijk. They are expected to make their move once the summer transfer window opens.

ANFIELD — Arne Slot and Unai Emery were almost identically dressed. Black windcheater, dark zip-up top, black trousers and black trainers. The space Slot stepped into in the summer was very similar to the one that swallowed Emery when he succeeded Arsene Wenger six years ago. Wenger had dominated and shaped Arsenal perhaps even more than Jurgen Klopp had moulded Liverpool. They both entered a dressing room which knew only one voice.
