British component suppliers into the Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II programme could be facing millions of pounds in unexpected costs from US President Donald Trump’s global trade tariffs if they ever go into effect. The so-called ‘liberation day’ tariffs announced earlier this month will add 10% to the price of British-sourced components, prompting fears that the Trump may be trying to push through his long-held ambition to drive international suppliers out of the F-35 programme.

Speculation has been running rife since the nuclear-powered attack submarine, HMS Astute, was manoeuvred into the Devonport naval base by Serco tugs earlier this week. Social media reports and local news publications described the submarine as “broken” and said she required major repairs in the Babcock-run dockyard, alongside HMS Audacious.

Britain’s fleet of P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft will head to the United States later this year to begin a programme of depot, or depth in UK parlance, maintenance. The Ministry of Defence had hoped to carry out the work, which could initially cost around £100m at a site in Britain, but they told Defence Eye that it had not been “possible to develop an affordable UK-based solution”.
