Speculation has been running rife since the nuclear-powered attack submarine, HMS Astute, was manoeuvred into the Devonport naval base by Serco tugs earlier this week. Social media reports and local news publications described the submarine as “broken” and said she required major repairs in the Babcock-run dockyard, alongside HMS Audacious.

When the Prime Minister announced plans in February to boost defence spending to 2.5% of gross domestic product in 2027 it sounded like this was a done deal. In his House of Commons statement, Sir Keir Starmer then said this would be “an increase of £13.4bn year-on-year compared to where we are today”. At the time, Defence Eye wondered why the Prime Minister, the Ministry of Defence and Treasury had not released specific year by year figures for the uplifted defence budget.

BAE Systems Archer 155mm self-propelled artillery systems have been deployed to Estonia by the Royal Artillery to join the British-led NATO Enhanced Forward Presence battlegroup in the Baltic state. The British Ministry of Defence did not announce the deployment, which only emerged when one of the weapons was seen in video footage of a visit to the battlegroup by Prince William.
