On Oct. 4, 1957, the USSR launched Sputnik I, the first artificial earth satellite to successfully enter orbit. In the United States, the reaction was swift—how could our educational system have let us down? Since that time, educational reformers have leveraged “sputnik-like” moments to propose and enact changes to the way we run our public schools.
