Starting in November and continuing into March, the skies are cloudier and grayer, so the amount of daylight is very limited compared to the long sunny days of summer. This reduction in the amount of light we receive can affect people in many ways. Some of the symptoms are depression, anxiety, irritability and sleeplessness. People who have more than minor symptoms may have what used to be called the “winter blues,” but now has a more scientific term: seasonal affective disorder, or SAD.

As we approach the holiday season, which includes Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hannukah and Kwanzaa, many people plan to spend time with friends and family, enjoying each other’s company. For someone in recovery, these same holidays can present challenges to their efforts to stay sober. Alcoholics Anonymous and similar programs can be helpful resources, whether contacting a sponsor or just reaching out to people who understand and can offer support.
