Peer review is an integral part of science. It controls what papers appear in the most prestigious journals and strongly influences scientists’ careers. Early career researchers are acutely aware that their careers can be dependent on a single peer review decision [1]. Despite the importance of peer review, there are many gaps in our understanding, including how to determine high-quality peer review and how journal policies influence peer review [2].
