At root, we are nations who have forgotten what freedom is for, choosing instead to define freedom by what we are free from, such as rules, constraint, or responsibilities. Freedom is always unsustainable for a morally malformed people. The freedom to do however we wish always leads to tyranny, either slavery to one’s own passion or slavery to a force aimed at curbing behavior.

On Lexington Green in Massachusetts, 250 years ago this month, "the shot heard round the world" was fired, and the American Revolution began. At dawn, in a common area not far from Boston, a little over 70 colonial militiamen faced down a much larger number of British regular troops. After a brief standoff where an army officer declared, "Throw down your arms! Ye villains, ye rebels," the locals refused to disperse. Instead, someone fired their weapon.

Back in February, the persecution watchdog organization International Christian Concern reported on a group of Iranian Christian women who had crossed the southern border into the United States. After seeking asylum as victims of religious persecution, they were deported to Panama. After a brief detainment, the women were released with permission to stay in the country for up to 90 days.

On Monday, April 21, Pope Francis I died in Vatican City in Rome. On Easter, in defiance of medical advice, he gave a public speech before meeting with U.S. Vice President JD Vance. Though his staff described his health as improving the week before, at 88 years old and struggling with lung ailments, his passing was not unexpected. Francis was born in 1936 to an Italian immigrant family in Argentina. Given the name Jorge Mario Bergoglio, he embodied a number of firsts.
