TAMWORTH — If you’re looking for something to do this weekend that will make you feel wonderful, check out Tom Rush live on stage at the Barnstormers Theatre on Saturday night. If you wandered down the main street of North Conway back in the late '70s or early '80s, you might remember seeing a broad display of T-shirts in the window of International Mountain Equipment (IME), Rick Wilcox‘s wonderful and long-lasting store.

Now that winter is here at last and in full force, the opportunities to ski are abundant. On Super Bowl Sunday, I took Charlie down to King Pine to ski with others of the family who ski there often. It’s been a long time since I had skied at King Pine, and he never has; and the distance from Jackson notwithstanding, it was a delight. Anyone who grew up in the heyday of skiing here in the valley can remember when skiing, and all its accoutrements, were far simpler than today.

Today’s snowstorm (on Wednesday) is different than the ones we’ve endured so far this winter. Instead of the stubborn rain and snow mix of late, all of which comes at that terrible temperature right around freezing, the cold and fluffy snow began this morning as if in a dream. There’s something lovely about a winter weekday when winter behaves as it should. A solid 17°F and a steady fluffy snowfall make for a winter scene like we all clearly remember from bygone days.
