Anna Arnold Hedgeman was born in 1899 in Marshalltown, Iowa. Her family later moved to Anoka, where they were the only African American family. Hedgeman’s father stressed religion, education, and hard work. In 1918, Hedgeman graduated from high school and was the first African American to attend Hamline University. In 1922, she was the first African American to graduate from Hamline. In college, she attended a lecture by W. E. B. Du Bois and was inspired to be a teacher.

(CNN) — A 43-year-old father was shot and killed in his home by a Las Vegas police officer last week, authorities said, after he called 911 for help. Las Vegas Metropolitan Police received multiple calls in the early morning hours of November 12 about a shooting on Wine River Drive. Brandon Durham, who was home with his 15-year-old daughter, told 911 that people were shooting at his house and had broken in, Assistant Sheriff Dori Koren said at a news conference last week.

By Tina Burnside, CNN(CNN) — A Tennessee woman was indicted on federal charges after allegedly attempting to hire a hitman to kill the wife of a man she met on a dating site. Melody Sasser, 47, of Knoxville, was taken into custody last month for allegedly trying to arrange the murder. She was indicted on “use of interstate commerce facilities in the commission of murder-for-hire” on June 7, according to a news release from the US Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Tennessee.
