The current occupant of the Oval Office kicked off the year by cancelling federal funds for public EV charging stations in the US, casting a pall of gloom over the environment for EV sales. The downward spiral of industry leader Tesla hasn’t helped matters much, including a fresh hit to the company’s Supercharger network in New Jersey. Still, activity in the EV charging area continues apace, in yet another indication that the vehicle electrification movement is here to stay.

Despite an abrupt shift in energy policy over in the US, it’s a big world out there and lots of decarbonization action is occurring elsewhere around the globe. The UK-based global think tank Ember, for example, ran the numbers and calculated that solar energy and other forms of clean power — by which the organization means nuclear energy, too — combined to account for more than 40% of global electricity generation last year, setting a new record.

A 1980’s-era semisubmersible crane vessel known as “Heerema’s Workhorse” steamed its way over to Rhode Island last week to gear up for its next assignment, building the 810-megawatt Empire Wind offshore wind farm off the coast of Long Island in New York. It’s a concrete sign that Empire is back in business, even as other offshore wind projects in the US fall victim to the Trump chopper.
