1 What is already known about this subject Inconsistent effects of prescription drug monitoring programs (PDMPs) on prescribing have been found across different studies. There is little understanding of how PDMP use impacts prescribing for individual patients, including the prescribing of nonmonitored medications. PDMP use may lead to a rise in prescribing of alternative medications that are not monitored, known as a substitution effect.
