    PEORIA — Leif Mattson scored as dramatic a goal as could be scored – coming with one-tenth of a second left in regulation to force overtime against Peoria in Thursday’s SPHL playoff opener. However, the Quad City Storm couldn’t pull off the road upset. Peoria’s Jordan Ernst – who led the league in regular-season goals with 37 – scored a top-shelf goal 4:48 into the overtime session to give the hosting Rivermen a 5-4 victory at the Peoria Civic Center.

    There may have been a symbolic changing of the guard Friday evening for the Quad City Storm as they continued their quest for an SPHL playoff berth. Rookie Dylan Massie scored his first professional hockey goal in a 3-1 loss to Knoxville and veteran Alex Hudson more than likely played his final game. The 37-year-old East Moline resident who has been in and out of the Storm lineup much of the season skated off the ice at Vibrant Arena at The Mark to a salute from his teammates.

    The hits just keep coming for the John Deere Classic and local country music fans. Officials of the local PGA Tour event announced Wednesday morning they have filled the Saturday slot for the Concerts on the Course show with Grammy-nominated artist Dierks Bentley. The Country Music Award winner will fill the 18th hole and surrounding hillside at TPC Deere Run in Silvis with his hits following play on the evening of Saturday, July 5.

    When the Quad City Steamwheelers had the ball near the goal line in Friday’s IFL opener, there was a good chance that quarterback Daquan Neal was going to finish the drive. He proved that with three short rushing touchdowns in the first three quarters of QC’s 39-37 victory over Green Bay at Vibrant Arena at The Mark before a nice crowd. That also had the Green Bay defense thinking the same thing late in the fourth.

    Rules in the Indoor Football League have seemed to favor the offenses — which is how you get scores pushing 50, 60, 70 points in some games. Well, this year, there have been some tweaks to the rulebook that will definitely make the game look a bit different — and possibly favor the defenses a bit. Defensive linemen now can twist at the line of scrimmage on their rush and more closely mimic the outdoor game.
