The Chinese University of Hong Kong will present the Asian premiere of Professor Tod Machover’s chamber opera Schoenberg in Hollywood on November 4, 2023. This performance, at the Grand Theater of Longgang Cultural Center in Shenzhen, is part of a series of events celebrating the 150th anniversary of the birth of composer Arnold Schoenberg, including an academic conference and live performances taking place from November 3–5.

Based on a mystical vision Dick called his "pink light experience," VALIS was an acronym for "vast active living intelligence system." The metaphysical novel would become the basis for Machover's opera of the same name, which first premiered at the Pompidou Center in 1987, and was recently re-staged at MIT for a new generation.

Tod Machover's first opera, VALIS, broke new ground and garnered rave reviews when it premiered in 1987, called "a work of bold imagination, strongly individual personality, and undeniable emotional impact" ( Musical America) and "one of the brightest and most intelligent of new American operas" ( The New Yorker). The CD of VALIS-still available on Bridge Records-was named "Best of the Year" by The New York Times.

The Dallas Symphony Orchestra's new Jeanne R. Johnson Education Center will provide interactive music experiences to students across North Texas, focusing on STEAM-based creativity and learning activities produced in cooperation with the Media Lab's Opera of the Future group. GAMMIFIED is based on current research at the MIT Media Lab, as well as in the MIT labs of Professors Li-Huei Tsai and Ed Boyden. This research has shown that frequencies of ca. 40 Hz. (approximately the low-E on the piano) play fundamental roles in our brains. Specifically, healthy brains hum with this frequency, which in turn activates many functions central to mental sharpness.
