Each presents its own problems for policing the integrity of scholarly record. In turn, each has received significant attention recently as scholarly publishers grapple with their fundamental duty, which is to provide vetted, trusted research to the world.

As artificial intelligence (AI) systems become increasingly integrated into scholarly research and knowledge dissemination, publishers face a critical challenge: how to best integrate their content into this new ecosystem. Currently, an increasing number of publishers are collaborating with AI system suppliers to license their content for large language model training, small model development, and retrieval-augmented generation applications.

In its earliest days, scholarly publishing developed out of the exchanges where people were seeking to distinguish themselves from the charlatans or supposed alchemists who made wild claims about transforming materials into gold or such like. People would have to prove their results and were sharing them so that others could replicate them. Later, the formal peer review process began as a way to formalize a vetting process prior to publication and thereby enhance trust.
