WASHINGTON -- Justin Verlander said he felt “great” Friday night after he won his season debut. Framber Valdez threw a bullpen session Saturday morning that went well. A comeback win appeared all but secured Saturday afternoon when the Astros took a late lead at Nationals Park. But their progress was undone by another rickety bullpen performance. Ryan Pressly allowed two runs in the bottom of the ninth and Seth Martinez gave up the losing run in the bottom of the 10th inning.

WASHINGTON -- Justin Verlander walked to the mound at Nationals Park on Friday and leaned over to pick up the baseball. He warmed up under cloudy skies and in front of a sparse crowd. The 41-year-old loosened his potent right arm to make his season debut and career start No. 510. Shoulder inflammation stalled Verlander’s Spring Training start by two weeks, then delayed his season debut for longer. The Astros need him.

WASHINGTON -- When Drew Millas pushed a 1-2, 97 mph fastball toward third base in the seventh inning on Saturday, he hoped a familiar face would not derail what looked like his first Major League hit. Jake Burger, his former Missouri State teammate and the Marlins’ third baseman, was swung toward shortstop, well off the line. The ball bounded into left field, setting off a chain of events. Millas’ mom, Lynelle, cried in the stands. Those in the Nationals' dugout signaled for the ball.
