This year’s pistachio crop is estimated at 1.1 billion pounds. Walnut production is expected to top 700,000 tons. Almonds are recovering from unprofitable grower returns. U.S. pistachios are largely sold out as optimism builds within U.S. almond and walnut markets. Jim Zion, managing partner of Meridian Growers, a California-based tree nut marketer, says what few supplies of U.S. pistachios remain will be sold for Asian festivals by the time harvest gets under way late this summer.

While this has erased billions of dollars in farm equity across the state, the fallout will be seen in communities and public services as county tax assessments are likely reduced on appeal. The transition of Western Agricultural Processors Association (WAPA) to become the Western Tree Nut Association (WTNA) wasn’t as much a large marketing change as it was a better description of what the Fresno-based association was already doing.
