With its dramatic victory in the final race of the state meet, the Lamar Texans captured the UIL 6A Boys State Track and Field Championship. The Texans claimed the championship by winning the 4x400 meter relay in a time of 3:11.94 to edge out Killeen Shoemaker by six points for the state title. “Going into the mile relay (4x400 meters) we knew we had to win to get the state championship,” said Texans boys track and field coach Gerrick Green.

It was the greatest season in school history for the Bellaire Cardinals boys basketball team, which came within one victory of its first-ever state championship. The Cardinals advanced to the UIL 6A Division 1 State Final before falling to perennial powerhouse Duncanville by a heartbreaking 54-52 final in the state title game. “It was an extremely rewarding season,” said longtime Bellaire head coach Bruce Glover.

It was another season of total dominance for the St. John’s Mavericks wrestling team, capped off with its 11th SPC Championship in the last 13 seasons. They won the title by a decisive 102-points margin. Along the way this season, the Mavericks also brought home a seventh straight Prep State Championship as well as a fourth consecutive State Duals Championship, giving St. John’s a clean sweep of the state’s three major wrestling championships.

It’s a new era for Memorial High School with the hiring of Brooks Haack as the Mustangs head football coach and campus athletic director. The 31-year-old comes to Memorial after helping lead Richmond Randle High School to the 5A Division II State championship last season as the team’s assistant head coach and offensive coordinator.
