A love of farming shines in Len Vonderhaar’s eyes as he gazes at the vast fields of corn and soybeans that he has owned in Preble County, Ohio, since 1961. “It is such a reward to be out there,” he says. Vonderhaar still works his family’s farm at age 87 despite three back surgeries and chronic pain in leg joints. He drives a combine harvester across 2,700 acres, for as much as 14 hours a day, to complement the agricultural duties done by his son and two grandchildren.

Recently, he did just that with his 3rd period Rec Games class by giving them the opportunity to experience Olympic-level diving up close and in person. Jones reached out to John Wingfield, owner of Ripfest Diving Club, based in Arcadia, IN, to create this unique experience.

Archie Griffin ’76 flashes his familiar smile while holding the Heisman Trophy for yet another photo in a half-century’s worth of graciously posing for the camera. Although physically taut at age 70, the beloved Buckeye icon finds the cast bronze Heisman to be a bit cumbersome in his arms. “This trophy is heavy,” Griffin says with a laugh.

Don’t ask the soon-to-retire Gene Smith to pick the most memorable moments from his 19 years as Ohio State’s inaugural Wolfe Foundation Endowed Athletics Director. There are too many, he says. The Buckeyes filled Smith’s tenure with celebrations: 35 team and 127 individual national championships — including the first College Football Playoff in 2014 and a women’s hockey NCAA title this year — and 115 team and 369 individual Big Ten titles.

Twice a year, Palmer leads one-week cohorts, sharing her own experience and expertise. She says it’s about “helping people to remember their past, embrace their present and envision their future.” This class is one commitment in a jam-packed schedule that follows a particularly trying year: Palmer broke her wrist and battled COVID-19, then dealt with ensuing depression. But today, it seems like she hasn’t lost a step. Palmer commands the room with charisma and raw authenticity.

Jerry Hissem ’93 has spent the past 24 years floating among the clouds, reveling in the intricacies of piloting a famous 246-foot helium-filled blimp. “Everything I learned at Ohio State, I use every day on my job,” Hissem says. His job is chief pilot of the Goodyear airship, which taps into his background in math, science and physics — skills built while earning an Ohio State degree in aviation.
