When fourth-graders at Willow Springs Elementary School dived into a local history project, the name that kept popping up was Parrie Haynes. Students worked to create brochures explaining why their chosen location should be an historic landmark. “Their assignment was to find a place in Killeen and write an opinion brochure saying why it should be considered a historic landmark,” said teacher Tara Barmer.

Douse Elementary School hosted STEM Day recently, as in science, technology, engineering and math. First through fifth grade students cycled through a packed schedule of activities all in an effort designed to spark their imagination in learning.

New Killeen ISD teachers are getting an earlier than usual start this year with three days of induction training a week-and-a-half before the official “District Awareness” introduction. The district’s instructional specialists put together the three days of learning called “Building Clarity Through Connections.”About 280 new teachers met Tuesday for the first time. They received a welcome from campus administrators as they walked into the Killeen Civic and Conference Center.
