Every now and then, you discover a fishing lure that’s completely transformative, one that draws ferocious strikes from fish that are bigger than you expect to catch. I tied one on this week while targeting speckled trout in a large South Louisiana coastal lake, and it was … well, you just have to see it to believe it! Check out the video.

/ Field Reports/Catch and cook: A variety pack in the Louisiana marsh VIDEO Many of my trips into the South Louisiana marsh begin with an idea of a dish I’d like to try. The fishing excursion is just an attempt to acquire the main ingredient. That’s what this one was all about, and it resulted in one of the best fish dishes I’ve ever made.

Lucky for anglers, speckled trout are predictable creatures that do the same things year after year, as they shift and move throughout the ecosystem to eat and spawn. This time of year, the former is high on their list as they get ready for the latter. So that means they go where the bait is, and right now, lots of it is funneling through deep bayous, where it bumps up against ledge walls that disorient it, making it easy prey for the marauding hordes of specks.

This is how I feel when I pinch the tail, and the trout clears the minimum size limit on the ruler.
