Assuming there are no "pay to play" postseason tournaments in its near future, the Marshall men's basketball team saw its season come to a frustrating end - bowing out of the Sun Belt Conference tournament on the wrong side of a bad call in a close loss in the quarterfinal round to eventual runner-up Arkansas State. It's a bitter pill to swallow for Thundering Herd fans, but don't let the way things ended for this group sour just how special this run really was. kAmr@C?J y24<D@?

Need more evidence that college football is a vastly changed sport? Marshall announced the addition of a whopping 62 new players (including those who already put pen to paper in December) last week on National Signing Day — 48 transfers and 14 high school recruits. That's not a judgment on the current state of affairs, that's just the way things work in college football in 2025.

Perhaps we should pump the brakes on the hype train for Marshall men's basketball. This Thundering Herd season has been peaks and valleys so far, an emotional roller coaster of sorts. They looked lost at times during non-conference play, but inspired some hope against Sun Belt Conference competition. MU was riding a three-game win streak — all on the road — coming into last week's Thursday and Saturday home set.

Just a few weeks ago in this space I started to question if perhaps it was time to start considering this a lost basketball season. Marshall was inconsistent at home and had yet to win a game on the road, and it felt like the Thundering Herd was on the brink of unraveling in mid-January. Talk about a turnaround. Marshall returns to Huntington this week riding a three-game win streak — all away from the Cam Henderson Center — looking to keep pace near the top of the Sun Belt Conference standings.
