The Indian River School District takes another shot at passing an operating expense referendum this year. Residents rejected the initial referendum attempt in March by a 675-vote margin. They’ll try again June 5th, still seeking to raise an additional $22.5 million dollars. If passed, taxpayers will see an average increase of about $22.40 per month or about $270 per year. Superintendent Jay Owens is optimistic, despite the district not changing its ask.

It was a good day for incumbents in Dover’s municipal election Tuesday. All four incumbents on the ballot were victorious, including current Council President David Anderson who defeated Leroy Bradshaw Jr. in the Fourth District by a 137 to 55 vote margin. At large Councilman Andre Boggerty also held his seat along with fellow incumbents First District Councilman Gerald Rocha and Third District Councilman Fred Neil. Boggerty defeated Shereen Woodard Onyekachi 806 votes to 367 for the At-Large seat.

The city of Dover holds it municipal election Tuesday. Five City Council seats are on the ballot. In four of the races, incumbents are seeking to retain their seats. Council President David Anderson faces a challenge in the Fourth District from Leroy Bradshaw Jr.At large Councilman Andre Boggerty also attempts to stay on council along with fellow incumbents First District Councilman Gerald Rocha and Third District Councilman Fred Neil.

Newark has a new mayor. Newark City Councilman Travis McDermott defeats University of Delaware professor Mike O’Neal. He will replace the retiring Jerry Clifton in the mayor’s office. McDermott has been on Newark City Council for five years and served as Deputy Mayor since 2021. He’ll be sworn in April 17th and serve a 3-year term. Voters in District 1 return incumbent John Suchanec to Newark City Council. Suchanec fended off three challengers to hold his seat for another 2 year term.
