Nothing lasts forever. And so, this is my final column for the Portland Press Herald. For more than 10 years, I have written about Boston sports in this space. What a time to do it. This is “The Golden Age of Boston Sports,” an unmatched stretch of success that has seen the duck boats roll along the Charles River for 13 championships since 2001. The 2017 parade for the Super Bowl champion Patriots was held on a Tuesday, hours after a snowstorm ripped through Boston.

Leadership. Every successful team needs it. The Celtics and Bruins returned to work on Monday, hoping to find it from their top players. They missed it over the weekend, especially during each team’s overtime loss on Saturday. At TD Garden in Boston, the Celtics had a comfortable 10-point lead in the fourth quarter against the Atlanta Hawks, a team that was just two games over .500. Championship teams need to close those games out.

The Red Sox held their first Fenway Fest over the weekend. The one-day gathering in Boston replaced Winter Weekend, an annual tradition for the previous eight years. Fans met current and former players, posing for pictures and getting autographs. Yet many were thinking about a player who isn’t on the team. The presence of free-agent Alex Bregman, a veteran right-handed hitter who would help balance out the lefty-heavy Red Sox, was palpable at Fenway.

Andres Gimenez actually threw Story out at first after bobbling the ball on the final play, so it goes down as a force-out and an RBI for Story. And no error for the former Platinum Glove infielder.

Put the ball in play. It makes all the difference in the world. Strikeouts have hurt this team. When you put the ball in play you give yourself a chance to win.

"I was just trying to put the ball in play. I didn't really care what happened after that." -Trevor Story after the Sox take their second walk-off win of the homestead. Sox win 4-3, finish homestand 4-3. Back to .500 on the season.
