It looks like Cyprus politics has taken hostage the wastewater treatment plant in Mia Milia, foiling an agreement struck 14 years ago and resulting in the discarding of virtually all of the processed water – some 10 million tones of it a year – instead of the precious resource being utilised for irrigation in the north and south of the island.

Coral Bay has officially been designated a plastic-free beach, becoming the ninth beach in Cyprus and the first within the boundaries of the Akamas municipality to receive the designation. A small certificaton ceremony was held on the beach, attended by representatives of international tour operator Tui, including the Tui Care Foundation’s board of directors’ chairman Thomas Ellerbeck.

Pro-Palestinian activist Louis Allan on Saturday descended from the tree in the Nicosia suburb of Engomi, where he had spent almost a week on hunger strike to highlight the plight of Palestinians living in Gaza. During his protest, he had drunk only two litres of water per day – the amount available to the average Gazan at present, with the State of Israel accused by the United Nations of putting the strip “under a complete aid blockade for more than two months”.

Southampton salvaged a point in a surprising 0-0 Premier League draw with Manchester City on Saturday that meant they avoided being the joint-worst team in Premier League history. Rock bottom and relegated Southampton had looked poised to equal Derby County’s season-low tally of 11 points in 2007-08, but the draw moved them to 12 which had their fans at a sun-drenched St Mary’s Stadium singing in celebration.
