Snow showers will be around through midday in the U.P. As warmer air arrives aloft, it will change to a light freezing mix for the afternoon. The combination of the snow and a little glaze will make for potentially difficult driving this afternoon. However, no repeat of the major ice like we had last weekend. Precipitation will go to mainly rain by late in the day and continue this evening.

Snow and mix will take a little break mainly west of Marquette to Iron Mountain until early afternoon. East of that line, a mix of snow and freezing rain will continue. Ice amounts east of Marquette will range from .1″ to .2″ with some locally higher amounts. Snowfall up to an additional 4″ for the Marquette area for the balance of the afternoon. Will continue to monitor and update as needed in this weather regime for the day. TOTAL FORECASTED ICE ACCUMULATION FOR TODAY.

UPDATED 12:30 PM) We continue with a lull in the action for this afternoon. We will still see some mix in spots through the afternoon. Not much change in overall thinking from this morning. Next storm system will spread a freezing mix to the southern half of the U.P. near sunset, reaching Marquette by late evening.

ICE STORM WARNING FOR MUCH OF THE U.P. THROUGH SUNDAY. This is a complex system that will give a variety of freezing precipitation. We are well into the first round now, with freezing mix expanding through the western half of the U.P, including Marquette. Some heavy downpours and thunder/hail possible this evening. This precipitation will diminish after midnight-2am. A coating to as much as .2″ of ice possible by daybreak Saturday. Power outages and broken tree branches possible with the thicker ice.

Winter Storm Warning from 3pm this afternoon to 5am Thursday Morning. Snow and a mix just starting to fall in the southern end of the UP. This will eventually overspread the U.P., especially the eastern 2/3, by late afternoon. Snow will be heavy at times, and there may be some sleet and freezing rain mixed in, which would slicken up the roadways. Snowfall amounts a little tricky, with noticeable differences between models (as shown here on this site).
