“You’re stupid.”“No one will ever love you.”“If you don’t stop crying, I’ll really give you something to cry about.”“I wish you‘d never been born.”“I’ll get you for this.”“You’ll never be as good as your brother.”“Shut up!”“Never tell anybody about this.”This is emotional child abuse — and that’s only part of the spectrum of ways you can seriously hurt a child without actually touching her.

I did not see it coming. I didn’t even know I was nominated. I am deeply honored and humbled to be named Citizen of the Year by The Union in its 2024 Best of Nevada County magazine (March 29, page 11). But I didn’t do this by myself. NIMBYs (Not In My Back Yard) are people who do not want to share their neighborhoods with people of a lower socioeconomic status. Specifically, they don’t want people recovering from homelessness living near them, whether it be in a trailer or a group home. The self-implication of the letter writer is that he is a NIMBY. Let’s call him LW.
