With that many bills filed, they can’t all be winners, and Sen. Kolkhorst’s SB 819 is problematic, at least if you care about things like limited government, property rights and free-markets. SB 819 (which was rejected during the last legislative session) targets renewable energy in Texas. It should raise suspicion anytime legislation singles out an industry either for favor or disfavor, and SB 819 should raise such suspicion.

Tariffs are a terrible idea and (almost) everyone knows it. Investors know. Businesses know. Farmers know. Just about everyone knows that tariffs will raise prices, harm consumers, reduce consumption, result in retaliation by other countries, and thus hurt the economy. Everyone knows this except President Trump and (apparently) his enablers in Congress. Which is ironic, since by Constitutional design Congress has control over tariffs, not the president.

It’s a new year, a new Congress and, soon, a new presidential administration. The new year may be arbitrary in an astronomical sense, but for us humans, it keeps us sane to have a chance each new year to start again and try to do a few things better.
You know who could do a few things better? Congress.
I know you’re not surprised to hear that Congress needs improvement. After all, according to Gallup, Congress has a miserable 17% job-approval rating from the American people.
