Capital gains (CGT) hit a record £16.7 billion in tax year 2021/22 up 15% on the previous record year. Under the current regime, CGT is payable on the profits made when selling an asset, with the amount received by the Treasury more than doubling in ten years. House prices in the UK slumped to -3.8% in July - the greatest fall since July 2009 - as high borrowing costs continue to deter prospective buyers. The price of a typical home is now 4.5% below the August 2022 peak. Fund manager Abrdn is bringing down the curtain on its Global Absolute Return Strategies (Gars) fund, which was once of the UK’s largest investment funds. At its peak, Gars managed £45 billion for investors. However, after years of poor returns assets have slumped to less than £900m.
