    World Rally Championship drivers will spend 13 hours behind the wheel of their cars in what has been described as the “toughest” day of the season to date at Rally Portugal. A new look Rally Portugal schedule has created a demanding start to the fifth round of the season, with drivers set to complete 10 rough gravel stages, comprising a whopping 149.42 competitive kilometres. It will see crews set out on the road at 6am before returning to the rally base in Porto at 8pm.

    This weekend the World Rally Championship will swap asphalt for gravel as the series begins a run of seven consecutive loose surface events in Portugal. Portugal is one of the WRC’s most popular rounds among both drivers and fans, offering a challenge that will test teams and their machines to the absolute limit across 24 tricky stages. Toyota has won the opening four rallies this year and is unbeaten in Portugal since 2019, but nothing can be taken for granted in the WRC.

    After witnessing Toyota win the opening four rounds of the World Rally Championship, Hyundai is desperate to end the Japanese brand’s domination in Portugal this week. At this stage last year Hyundai and Toyota had shared the spoils winning two rallies a piece, with Thierry Neuville and Esapekka Lappi winning in Monte Carlo and Sweden, while Toyota’s Kalle Rovanpera and Sebastien Ogier were successful in Kenya and Croatia.
